Draughon Family at Roselawn Cemetery
and the "QR Code"
by Don Draughon - May, 2014
I have a thing about old pictures, family history, genealogy and such. At the same time I enjoy new technology such as computers, the Internet, digital cameras, etc. Recently I became interested in QR Code; it stands for "Quick Response" and is a cell phone readable bar code that can store among other things, a website’s URL. Its original purpose was to track vehicles during manufacture, but now it’s used for many things. Shoppers with smart phones use it to find out more about products they are interested in. They scan the QR barcode printed on the package and it takes them to a web site with more information about the product. Another idea is to place a QR code tag on a headstone so people can learn more about the individual buried there. Both of my brothers, my parents, grand parents, and some of my aunts, uncles and cousins are all buried at Roselawn Cemetery in Tallahassee. So I’ve spent a lot of time there thinking about them and it occurred to me that it would be nice to place a QR code on my grandfather’s headstone to share a little about their lives with others. So I put together this web site and had the QR code made by this company that burns the code onto a two inch square piece of stainless steel with an adhesive backing. Here is a picture of what it looks like on his headstone. I realize that a lot more people will find this web site by searching the Internet than will use the QR code at the cemetery, but it’s still a neat idea. And please, let me know if you are one of the ones that used the QR tag to find it. Also, here are the GPS coordinates and directions for the gravesite.
